5 DERMATOLOGIST TIPS FOR HEALTHY SKIN ON HOLIDAY

A holiday is a chance to relax and recharge. Unfortunately, your skin doesn’t always get the same treatment.

Between air travel, sun exposure, swimming pools, air conditioning and changes in routine, holidays can place extra stress on the skin. A few simple precautions can help keep your skin healthy, comfortable and radiant throughout your trip.

1. Prepare Your Skin for the Flight

Most aircraft cabins have very low humidity levels, which can leave the skin feeling dehydrated and tight.

Before travelling, apply a good moisturiser and continue to hydrate your skin during your journey. Drinking enough water can also help support your overall skin health.

If you’re travelling long-haul, avoid overusing active ingredients such as retinol or exfoliating acids immediately before your flight, as they may increase sensitivity.

2. Don’t Experiment with New Products

Holiday season is not the ideal time to try a completely new skincare routine.

A reaction to a new product can lead to irritation, redness or breakouts, which may be aggravated by sun exposure and heat.

When travelling, stick to products that you know work well for your skin.

3. Protect More Than Just Your Face

Most people remember sunscreen for their face but forget other areas that are exposed daily.

The neck, décolleté, ears, shoulders and hands are among the first places where sun damage and pigmentation become visible.

These areas deserve the same attention as your face.

4. Be Gentle with Your Skin

Between sunshine, swimming pools, salt water and warmer temperatures, your skin is already working harder than usual.

This is not the moment for aggressive scrubs or excessive exfoliation.

A gentle cleanser, a good moisturiser and appropriate sun protection are often all your skin needs to stay balanced during a holiday.

5. Keep Pigmentation in Mind

If you are prone to melasma, sunspots or uneven pigmentation, even a short holiday can trigger changes in the skin.

Consistent protection against UV exposure remains one of the most effective ways to help prevent pigmentation from developing or worsening.

For those with a history of pigmentation concerns, prevention is often easier than correction.

Healthy Skin Travels Well

Good holiday skincare does not have to be complicated. In fact, a simple routine focused on hydration, protection and consistency is often the most effective approach.

If you have questions about pigmentation, sun protection or maintaining healthy skin throughout the year, Dr. Dierickx can help you determine the best approach for your skin during a personalised consultation.
